How to solve Equations

First you ask your self what is being done to the variable in the equation. Then you have to isolate the variable. Then whatever you do to one side you do it to the other side of the = sign . To isolate the variable you must do the inverse operation the (opposite to both sides of the equation) .





For example:







x-8=17



Step one: isolate x





x-8=17
+8 +8



Step two: eight canels out and becomes x





x-8=17
+8 +8
x = 25



Step three:do 17+8=25





Here is how to check it:







Step one:Substitute 25 for x











x-8=17
25-8=17



Step two: do 25-8 which should = 17





x-8=17
25-8=17
17=17
