Exponents can be used to say 7x7=49 in a different way. In this example the 7 is the base number and because there two sevens the exponent is two. This is written like this:

This type of notation is useful in science because they sometimes work with very big numbers or very small numbers. For example scientists say there are 100 billion billion stars in the universe. It is easier to write 100 billion billion as

rather than 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. This is called Scientific Notation.
